What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage is a treatment based on old Ayurvedic techniques involving work on the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face. Originating in the East more than one thousand years ago, Indian Head Massage was originally developed as a grooming technique by women who used it to strengthen and improve the fullness of the hair. This was achieved by stimulating the pressure points on the scalp. The technique became part of everyday life and was practiced on young and old alike. It became a tradition that was handed down through the generations. A variety of massage movements are used to relieve accumulated tension, stimulate circulation and restore joint movement. Indian Head Massage is also used to aid the condition and health of the hair, particularly when combined with the use of natural organic oils.

Indian Head Massage is a valuable technique for combating stress which can show in the form of migraine, tension headache, hair loss, psoriasis or eye strain. This type of massage induces a sense of calmness, relaxation, tranquillity and releases anxieties. It also helps to improve concentration and alertness, relieves mental and physical tiredness and depression. When combined with the use of natural organic oils, Indian Head Massage can aid the condition and health of the hair.

What will happen during an appointment?

Indian Head Massage includes treatment to the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face to help reduce stress and fatigue, increase mental clarity, and relax and rejuvenate. It can be performed with or without oils or creams and there is no need to remove clothing as Indian head massage can easily be applied over a shirt or blouse making it ideal for people who are shy or nervous or for the less able bodied i.e. elderly, arthritic or disabled. The client is seated on a special Indian Head Massage chair which give the therapist the perfect access to the areas to be worked upon. Indian Head Massage treatments generally last for 45 minutes, although sometimes longer a treatment will be required depending on the individual need of the client. Your first appointment will usually last around 90 minutes as it will include a comprehensive consultation which will cover lifestyle, medication and medical history to establish your current state of health and determine how treatment will proceed.
